If your client is 100% grey (or close to it) and requests the ash blond shade she had when she was younger, resist the impulse to use an ash color. “The ash color worked well on pigmented hair because it helped subdue the unwanted warm tones as the hair lightens,” explains author and color expert David Velasco.

But once the hair has no pigment, an ash formula can cause it to appear drab, dark, steely, lavender or green. In this case, therefore, choose a natural or neutral base color formula, says David.
